Scribbler’s of Brevard
September 13, 2008
The meeting was called to order by our President David Clark at 1000.
We had one visitor, Marie Moris. She is a friend of Maurice.
Minutes from August 9th were read and approved after correction to the spelling of Jean’s story.
Scott read the treasurer’s report stating the balance remains the same. Which is $4,966.71. There are $45 in checks that need to be deposited.
Old business: Lori Knerick was at the meeting and updated us on having the new Driftwood signing at her art gallery. It was voted on by those present to have the book signing there. The hours will be from 2:00 to 4:00 PM on November 8. Lori’s art gallery is located downtown Melbourne at 802 E New Haven Ave. It’s two doors down from Meg O’Malleys. The name of the gallery is Art Gallery and Studio. An email will be sent out to those members not present.
New business: Walt had a prototype of the new Driftwood. It is our largest ever!! It has 298 pages. He will check on the names we need to include in the dedication of the book. It was also suggested that we contact the surviving spouse to let them know about the book’s dedication.
Jean mentioned that Lathan Hudson was hosting a special benefit for Sheryl Page. She is friend of his who has cancer. It was to be held in the Cocoa Village area.
Nancy had an email from Jean regarding an early suggestion on what to do for our January luncheon. It was for a dinner cruise. Members present seemed to like the idea of doing something different. Details of cost etc will be looked into.
Walt informed us that Jim Badger is now on dialysis. He is at home and hopefully will be rejoining us soon!
Roberta announced our first reader:
Scott Tilley read a story called The Natural. It was about his journey of becoming an American citizen. He said when he first came from Canada he was called an “alien”. A tern he did not find very pleasant. He had several definitions of the word alien. Scott then gave us a couple examples of questions he was asked before he could become a citizen.
Marjorie continued reading from her story called Hidden Robot. The story opened with Sarah talking to her robot friend Dusty. Then continued with her interface with a robot at home named Randy. Randy was called away to be with her dad for a while and when he came back he seemed different. She found out that all of Dusty’s memories had been placed in Randy’s memory chips
Betty read next a story about her trip to Wisconsin for her 60th high school class reunion. The title of the story was Kickapoo. How her return to Florida was delayed by Fay. She also describer her meeting with a holisitic healer. The meeting was held in the same hospital/nursing home that her father had been in. She did not have time to finish the story but promised to continue it at the next meeting.
Peggy was next with a story called A Date With Dwayne. A cute story about her date with a young man during her teenage years. It told of some of their dates and what happened on them. Her second reading was a short story called Linguistically Challenge or How Do You Buy Donuts In Miami. A delightful story about her and her husbands visit to Miami. They wanted to have donuts for breakfast but were not sure where to find them. How they stopped a man on the street to ask for directions in her best Spanish. Responded with “I don’t speak English!”
Roberta was our last reader. She read from a story she had published in the Tampa Tribune. It was called I Remember It Well. It was a true story about her memories of a trip back to Wyoming to a mine her father had once worked. How she was searching for a small piece of iron ore to take back home with her.
The Word Herder aka our president described what a participle was.
The meeting was then adjourned at 1130 with an invitation for everyone to meet for lunch at San Remo’s.
Respectfully submitted,
Nancy Clark
