Scribblers of Brevard

March 22, 2008

Our President David Clark called the meeting to order at 10:00. We had one visitor Olga, who was from Palm Coast.

Minutes from the the March 8th meeting were read. There were corrections made and then minutes were approved as read.

Treasurer Scott Tilley reported we had $4525 dollars in our account. He still has several checks that need to be deposited. Scott is still working on updating our roster. Again if anyone has issues with their personal information being released to all members please contact him and let him know. Hopefully an updated roster will be available soon.

Old Business: Submissions for the Driftwood. Do we currently have enough submissions to make a good sized edition? What is being done to publicize our book. Norma Baird was present and announced we had 26 prose and 25 poems submitted so far. Deadline for the Driftwood is currently 31 March.  So far there has been no publicity county wide for submissions. Jean is still working to get something in one of the papers annoucing we need submissions. A hand count was requested by David Clark to see how many people still need to get something turned in. There were 10 more folks who wanted to submit. A vote was taken on extending the deadline for the Driftwood until April 12th. Members voted on and passed the extension. The deadline for the Driftwood is now April 12th.

Edith announced we still need photos, paintings or drawings for the Driftwood. It was also brought up that any paintings, drawings or photos for the cover should relate to Florida since we are a Florida based group. Currently there are no restrictions on this. Further discussion was tabled until the April 12th meeting.

New Business:  Jim Badger announced he has a CD out. Kay Williams helped out with the background music and her husband Don did the front cover work. The CD is called Say Of Me and is available for $10.

Bill Allen announced he has copies of his much sought after book Greg Hart, Dragonslayer for sale. For a mere $10 for a defaced copy or $14.95 for a non defaced copy. These current ones will be collectors items as he has changed to front cover somewhat in the new editon.

Gus said he has current issues of the Driftwood for sale for $5 get them while we still have them!

Readers were announced. First to read was Bette with a story called Revelation Island.

Walt was up next who put a ending to the story Jean started last week. The story was called He Said She Said.  It was quite an intersting turn to the story. He also left it without a proper ending for someone else to add a part.

Jean read us an article she found on the internet A Whole New World, Reading For Pleasure.

Toni read us some of her poetry the first one was called Useless Poem. She followed this one with The Hunter, Thirty Third Floor, Changing Jobs, The Curtain, and Lost Slug. As always Toni’s poems were quite humorous.

Bill read to us for the last time from his book Greg Hart, Dragonslayer. If we want to learn more about Greg Hart and his adventures as a dragonslayer we will need to buy the book. He will start reading from one of his new books soon.

Sally gave us a short little four liner.

Grouchy Grammarian Corner:  Infinitives are our friends. Infinitives are the purest forms of verbs. They have no tense or no person and they always include the word “to”. The rule of the old school is “Thou shalt not split an infinitive”. The new updated rule is “You can split an infinitive if you know you are doing it and you have a reason to do it”.  A well known use of the infinitive is To be or not to be.  One of the better known splits of an infinitive is To boldy go where no one has gone before. In Latin you cannot split an infinitive.

The meeting was adjourned at 11:30 by David Clark.
