Scribbler’s of Brevard

July 26,2008

The meeting was called to order by our President David Clark at 1000. We had one late arrival visitor, Anne Flowers. She is a published crime story writer. She told us about several of the books she had written about crimes here in Florida.

Nancy read the minutes from the July 12th. They were approved as read.

Scott was not there to deliver the treasurer’s report. David had received an email from Scott stating we currently have $$4,966.71 in our account.

New business: We received a message from the library staff that said Lou would not be at the meeting as he was in the hospital. The message unfortunately did not state what hospital.

Norma handed out the prose with the comments from the judges on them. She sent back seven stories to the writers whose stories did not make the cut. She also has sent back the poems which did not make it for the Driftwood.

Marge announced that Peggy was not going to do the proofreading for this years Driftwood. She has volunteered to take on the duties of proofreader.

Roberta said everyone needs to give a big thank you to Norma for taking on the duties of getting the entries. She has done an outstanding job

Cecil has done research on our groups standing with the state. He has checked everywhere and very combination of our name and did not find anything. This in short means we are not a registered group. Janet said she remembered the group being chartered back when it first started. Cecil said it is quite possible that we were administratively terminated, because the club is supposed to register each year. He will do some more checking on our status.

Our president and secretary will search the file box that Walt gave them to see if there is anything there about the charter.

From the President’s Grammarian Corner:  Predicates in traditional English grammar. A predicate is one of two parts of a sentence. A predicate must contain a verb. The verb then requires permits or precludes other sentence elements to complete the predicate. These elements are: objects, predicatives and adverbials.

Roberta announced our first reader:

Cecil was first. He had been to a meeting over in Orlando and came up with an idea for a story. Debilitating Effects of Lack of Education.  It was very good. Next he read his response to a letter written to him. It was about how one should not take things out of content. Lastly he read a story called I Man. He had got the idea for it from one of the songs of Bob Marley.

Marge was up next with a story set in the year 2015. It was called Food From The Troposphere.  A look at food shortage in the future and what is being done to eliminate it. The scientists had developed a special new food substance that was developed and delivered to the residents of earth by robotic pilots.

Jean before reading told us about her morning breakfast. How she had this lovely new necklace and how she ended up with a spoon stuck to her chest because of it. She then read us a story called The Curse of the Statue. An intriguing tale of a cursed statue and the bad luck it seemed to bring the owners.

Maurice read us a letter he had received from his granddaughter asking to record or write down stories of his life. He then read us a story he wrote called Lost World of Jack and Jewel. A short piece about universal light.

Toni was up last and delighted us all with her unique and funny poems. She read Big Flower Big Smell the title of this one says it all! Then she read the following poems My Day, The Ant Hill, Giving Up the Good Life, Bucket #2, Photo In My  Heart and her last poem A Junk Pile. Toni has a great sense of humor and it shows in all of her poetry

The meeting was then adjourned at 1130 with an invitation for everyone to meet for lunch at San Remo’s.

Respectfully submitted,

Nancy Clark
