Scribblers of Brevard

September 27, 2008

The meeting was called to order by our fearless leader at 10:00.

We had no visitors present.

The treasurers report was given by the President as Scott was traveling again. The balance remains the same as before $4966.71. He has $70 in checks to deposit and promises to deposit them when he gets back.

The minutes for Sept 13 were read and approved as read.

It was announced that there were only two copies of Driftwood 24 left. We needed an idea as what to do with them. Membership present decided that the one would go to the best reader of the day. The second would be given as a gift to the gentlemen who gets the dais and microphone out each meeting. Gus says he believe however that Walt may have another box of them. These we decided could be dropped off at our various doctors offices, hospitals or nursing homes.

There was no old business that needed discussing.

One of our past members Stephanie Andrews stopped in. She returns after a long absence from the group and hopes to rejoin us soon!

New Business: Jean was wondering if during our book signing party that those members who had published works could sell them that day. We are not sure if this would cause any problem with Lori’s art gallery. Nancy said she would send an email to Lori to find out if this could cause any issues.

Tara brought in a notice she had seen in the Florida Today regarding local authors. They have set up a special section in their Local Authors column, which runs periodically in the Sunday Life section. If anyone is interested in this the address for submitting information is www.floridatoday.com/authors. The form ask for information about the author, the title of the book, a little something about the book, where it can be book and if you are having a book signing.  This would be a great way to get information on your book out to the local community.

Betty announced that Walt had taken the Driftwood 26 to the publishers. Looks like everything is proceeding nicely and right on schedule for this years addition. The cost estimate is $1836.00. We are having only 200 copies made this year.

It was asked when we submissions for the next Driftwood would start. We believe that will be around January with the deadline being the end of March. Of course that will probably be slipped as it was this year.

Lori Crand announced that she had recently seen Jim Badger. He says he is doing well. He waiting to get his home dialysis equipment. As it is now his weekly dialysis is done on Saturday’s. He hopes he will be getting it soon. Sends his regards and that he misses all of us.

Roberta announced our readers. She requested before each person started reading they announced who they were. This way the visitors would know who was reading.

Maurice was our first reader. He read from an email he sent to his eldest daughter. It was entitled Letter To Michelle. He told her how proud he was of her and the way she took on being an independent adult.  He also read another excerpt from an email talking about his daughter Lori and the trials and tribulations she went through growing up. How she managed to find her own path to wisdom as an adult

Marjorie read to us from a new story Professor. A dialogue between a professor and his students. How he was talking to them about the universe and if they believed in the electromagnetic string theory.

Lou touched our hearts with an article he had written back in 1945 during the war. He had written an article for his shipboard newspaper called Day Unto Day.  It talked about their coming into the port of Guam. Also included was a poem he had written called Crosses of Memory. A very moving tribute.

Tara who is working on a book read to us from the first chapter. The book is called A Sense of Deception. It was about a retired dentist and his trip to Florida. He had a witty traveling companion to keep him company a macaw called Ace!

Betty was last with the rest of her story called Kickapoo. Which was about her trip to her 60th class reunion. She adopted a cute little fur ball while she was there. The story related all of the problems she faced trying to get the little fella back home.

Our president announced he would not be at the next meeting as he had to work. He said he was leaving the group in Roberta’s capable hands. He also said everyone should start to think about officers for next year. He said he would not run for President again and that Roberta does not wish to ascend to President. Nancy was asked if she would remain as secretary and she said she would.

Meeting was adjourned at 11:00 with an initiation for everyone to lunch at San Remo’s.

Respectfully submitted

Nancy Clark
