LEST WE FORGET

The Spanish Civil War 1936-1939

In the 1930's concern was growing at the rise of fascism in Europe.
In Spain, General Franco and the Falange Party led a coup to overthrow the democratically elected government and the Civil War began.
Franco was supported by the German Nazi Party and other European fascists and there followed three years of bitter fighting before fascism triumphed.
Spain was devastated and half a million lives were lost.
Volunteers from 54 countries arrived in Spain to fight the forces of fascism. Some 35.000 foreigners formed the International Brigade.
Over 200 were young Welshmen, many were wounded or lost their lives as they fought bravely for their socialist belief of Community and Democracy.
Bedwas, Trethomas and Machen Community Council dedicate this plaque to their eternal honour.
