James was born in Somers Town London in 1894.

He Joined the Army in 1911 and served throughout the Great War to 1918.

He was a member of Ox & Bucks Light Infantry as well as 2nd Divisional Signals Company and was awarded the Military Medal and the Distinguished Conduct Medal.

His citation for the DCM reads

"For conspicious gallantry and devotion to duty. He has been continously on active service since the outbreak of hostilities, and in many important engagements has done invaluable work maintaining communications with the various battalions and in repairing telephone lines under heavy fire. During lengthy operations he was in charge of a forward station, where the lines were continually being cut, and he carried out his duties with the greatest skill and resource."
