WHO IS IN IT: Cate Winslet and Leonardo di Caprio are the central couple, with a huge and marvellous supporting cast including Kathy Bates and Billy Zane. WHAT IT IS ABOUT: As the title suggests, it is about the maiden (and final) voyage of the Titanic. Against this fascinating historical backdrop, a fictional tale of intrigue and romance is woven. A current day deepsea exploration crew, searching the wreck for a lost priceless diamond necklace, discover instead a portrait of a young woman wearing the necklace. They find an old woman( Gloria Stuart in a fine performance) who claims to be the one in the picture, and she relates her riveting story in flashbacks. A society girl, she is aboard Titanic to return to America for her wedding to the insufferable (but rich)Cal Hartley (Billy Zane) when she meets the free spirited (but poor)Jack Dawson(Di Caprio). They form a bond and become soulmates after he prevents her from suicide. The events which unfold between them are cleverly interwoven with sailing (and ultimately sinking) aboard the Titanic. WHAT I THOUGHT ABOUT IT: I thought it was probably the best film I have ever seen. I may be slightly biased, as I have always had a fascination with the Titanic, and I like novels and movies which have historical context. But this film has a little of everything. There is romance, humour, music, history, action, adventure, tragedy and mystery. The acting was first class, Di Caprio and Winslet making a delightful duo. The Titanic design itself was magnificent and the special effects believable. I felt that the essence of the Titanic and what it must have been like (both in first class and below decks) was captured. ROUNDUP: This movie runs 3 and a half hours, but I was riveted throughout. It is a BIG movie and you need to see it on the BIG screen to fully appreciate it. I am not sure if all the effects would remain as potent on TV. If you only see one movie this year, if you only see one movie this LIFETIME, make it TITANIC!
