There was much interest in the Bronte Bowling Club and concern that the Club was about to allow some of its land to be
developed to build town houses. It was suggested that bowling clubs are a part of the Australian way of life and that the
community needs all the open space it can get to act as a buffer against development. Every effort should be made to help
the club and keep them operating viably.
Cr Sloan stated that she had already suggested this to Kim Anson, General Manager Waverley Council, but that Council
would not become involved at this stage. It was decided that a group representing the Precinct should meet with the
Executive of the Club and ascertain what help could be given. Davina Owens expressed thanks to the group for doing this.
MOTION 1.
Bronte Beach Precinct advised Waverley Council of its opposition to any additional building on land operated by the Bronte
Bowling Club as the Precinct believes that:-
All open space for both passive and active recreation must be preserved.
Increasing density of building expansion makes it imperative that all open space is preserved for present and future
residents and their quality of life.
Rather than let this unique and valuable space go, the Precinct sees it as a viable option to bring in managerial support
with the backing of the Council.
Proposed Fay Brown, Seconded Anne Thompson
Carried unanimously.

November 2002
Guest Speaker- H. G. Nelson, Topic - "Is Bronte Buggered?"
H.G. suggested that the residents could buy back Bronte as a solution to the over development problem. He also outlined
the approach taken in the Clovelly Bowling Club’s resuscitation where a small Meeting was held involving stakeholders,
community representatives, and other interested parties to broker an agreement for the Club’s future. His talk was followed
by questions particularly focussed on his ideas about the Bronte Bowling Club.
..........
Bronte Bowling Club.
There was considerable discussion on this, and everyone felt that the Council should make every effort to save the Club
rather than merely allow development there, as this would not solve the problem (of falling membership and falling income)
in the long run.
Suggestions included:–
Encouragement of the Club to prepare a Business Plan and seek help from Club Biz.
The Club
should consider other examples set by the Clovelly, Paddington and Waverley Bowling Clubs as to how to revitalize a
flagging Club without resorting to developing bowling greens.
That the Club undertake a new Membership drive , the Club
consider the number of businesses such as jazz, and music nights, school sports needs ,other sports such as bocce and
petanque all of which are interested in negotiating with the Club
The Possibility of the alternative development of a swim
centre, several other enthusiastic suggestions.
It could not be said that the meeting was unsympathetic to the club’s
plight, no(r) lacking in constructive comments.
Motion 2. The Bronte Beach Precinct expresses its extreme concern at the present financial situation and proposed development of
the Club. It urges Council to establish a joint Meeting of the Management of the Club, and the Waverley resident’s action
group to consider alternative strategies for saving the Club as opposed to rezoning.
Proposed – Val Stuart. Seconded - Mich Henry
Motion passed unopposed
Motion 3 . In addition, that Bronte Beach Precinct suggests that Council contact the Club and suggest the Club pursue an application
to Club NSW to obtain a "Club Biz Health Check "before any DA is approved".
Proposed – Greg Parker, Seconded – Ann Thompson.
For the Motion - 25. Against the Motion – 1.
Motion passed.
Motion 4.
Bronte Beach Precinct urges Council to reject the re-zoning of the Bronte Bowling Club because of the need to retain open
space.
