Stanwyck fans knew they were in for some surprises as soon as she appeared on screen. Sporting a shoulder-length light blond wig, complete with bangs,(Wilder's idea) and dressed loosely in a silky robe, Barbara exuded raw, unadultered, but obviously adulterous, sex. Her presence throughout the film was incredibly sensual and Edith Head's costuming of the coldhearted dame was appropriately confined to very tight skirts and sweaters or alluring garments alluding to silk and sex. The package was even wrapped with a gold ankle bracelet (that soon was imitated worldwide) As the posters said the scenes between Barbara and Fred MacMurray were infused with sexual anxieties almost never before seen on film. The eroticism between the two can almost be touched. |
"Double Indemnity" got seven Academy Award Nominations: Best Picture, Director, Actress, Cinematography (B&W) , Music, Sound recording, and writing (screenplay) Barbara lost to Ingrid Bergman for "Gaslight" but every critic raved about her performance, more than ever before (if that was possible). |
