HIGH ADVENTURE
Badlands Loop

The March backpack turned out to be quite new and exciting for many Scouts. The Troop's Venturing participants hiked a total of approximately 11 miles before reaching base camp. We explored the many caves and hills that surrounded us on all sides. On Sunday morning we had a bad feeling it would rain so we packed up and got out of the wash. About thirty minutes before we reached the cars it started to rain. We reached the cars at about 10 am and we were headed home dirty, tired, and restless. (-Ryan)

To call this just a backpack wouldn't give it justice. Put your cursor over each picture to read about our trip. (-Webmaster)

Starting the hike. Notice we're all clean and dry. We did find a few water holes - if you call that water. Tracks show that a bobcat liked it though. When we had no trail... We went up... ...then we had to go down again.
Most of the first day we were climbing on slippery sandstone. You can't say we ain't got culture. Near camp was this lovely sculpture garden Heading out on day two. Rain threatened to soak us the whole weekend. Fortunately it waited until the last mile. The rain reminded us to always Be Prepared! At the top of a ridge we paused to rest. Some were trying to figure out how to get down the other side. Looking back we could see where we'd been. Looking forward we could see the faint trail going down the narrow ridgeline.
Was this really the way? The trail followed the top of this steep ravine.
Careful walking got us down safely. Who had acrophobia? It wasn't your usual follow the trail backpack. We practiced map and compass routefinding in tough terrain, hopefully learned a bit more, and had a great adventure.
