The Boy Scouts of America was founded when Norman Rockwell was 16 years old.  He found success before the age of 16 painting for commission.  While still in his teens Rockwell was hire as the art director for Boys' Life.

His chance to be a good Scout came in 1924, when he created his first Boy Scout Calendar.  From 1924 to 1974, in all but two years, he painted calendars for the Boy Scout organization.

In 1939 Norman Rockwell moved his family from New Rochelle, NY to Arlington, VT and his work began to reflect small town America life more consistently.  In year of 1943 Rockwell lost his Arlington studio, numerous paintings, costumes and props to a fire.  The Rockwell's moved from Arlington to Stockbridge, MA in 1953.

In 1977 Rockwell  was awarded his highest honor by President Eisenhower.  Norman Rockwell was bestowed with the Presidential Metal of Freedom, for his "vivid and affectionate portraits of our country."  He died peacefully at home November 8, 1978.
