The Legate Coat of Arms hereby illustrated is officially
documented in Siebmacher's Wappenbuch. The original
description of the Arms (shield) is as follows:
"B. MIT R. VORWARTS GEKEHRTEN LOWENKOPF, BESTECKT MIT 3
w. HALBEN (DIE UNTERE STATT DER ZUNGE) LILIEN."
When translated the blazon also describes the original
colours of the Legate arms as "Blue; charged with a red
lion's head facing forward, issuing from the ears and mouth
are three upper halves of white fleurs-de-lis." Above the
shield and helmet is the crest which is described as: Two
white fleurs-de-lis, staffs placed points together."
Legates and Coleridges
William and Ann (Young) Legate both born in 1804 and died
in 1852, had 13 children although the names Myles, Mary and
John seemed to have been used twice, although not at the
same time, which makes it confusing . Four of the children
died very young John (1826 - 28), Myles (1829 - 44), a
second John (1835-37), and Mary 1839-42. The others lived a
long life into their sixties seventies and eighties except
for Anne who married her first cousin Robert Legate of
Greenside, the son of Robert Legate of Fossy, Ireland. They
had five sons and three daughters before Anne and William
both died in 1874 at the age of 40. Their son, Robert -born
in 1854, married Elizabeth Jane Coleridge
Jane Cleave (1826-1911) married Daniel Coleridge
(1822-1913) in 1849 and had a daughter named Elizabeth
Coleridge. Their neighbours, Mary (Young) and Robert Legate
had a son Robert who married Elizabeth Coleridge in 1876.
