Clovis Invitational09/06/02 Clovis Invitational Day 1
The team opened the tournament with a tough game against the Mt Whitney Pioneers. Dawn Davies started thing off with two quick kills to give the team an early 2-1 lead. Then, with the score 4-2, Nikki Ciapponi (two kills) and Emily Barr (one kill) helped the team increase their lead to 7-2. A nice double block by Megan Rohel and Julie Geissert helped give the team a commanding 12-6 lead. The Pioneers would never recover as the team went on for a 15-9 win. In the next game, the Pioneers would jump out to an early 1-3 lead. The team battled back to take a 7-4 lead. But, this time, the Pioneers would not quit and battled back to tie the score at 8-8 and then take a 8-13 lead. That's when the offence kicked into high gear. Two kills by Nikki Ciapponi, two kills by Arveeta Singh, a kill by Lauren Yamaoka and a service ace by Dawn Davis helped the team pull out a come from behind 15-13 win. Next up, was the Sierra High Chieftains. The team started off well. With the score 1-0, Megan Peranick served up four straight points to give the team an early 5-0 lead. But, the Chieftains would battle back to cut the lead to 8-5. The team then turned it into high gear. A double block by Megan Rohel and Andrea Tom, a kill by Megan Rohel and a kill by Nikki Ciapponi help the team increase their lead to 12-5. The Chieftains tried to fight back but, fell by a final score of 15-7. The team started out fast in the next game as the jumped out to an early 6-0 lead. Then, with the score 6-2, Megan Peranick caught fire and served up nine straight points to help the team to an easy 15-2 win. The last match in pool play was against the Central High Grizzlies. The game started out close as the teams battled it out. Then, with the score 5-3, the team would score the next ten straight points (three service points by Nikki Ciapponi, a service point by Taylor Jerri, four service points by Dawn Davies, and two service points by Megan Rohel) to cruise to a 15-3 win. The second game started out like the first as the teams battled it out. Then, with the score 4-3, the team got hot and went on a 10-1 run to take a commanding 14-4 lead. Julie Geissert then, finish off the Grizzlies with a service ace to help the team to a 15-4 win. The team finished the first day of pool play with a perfect 3-0 record. With the first place pool finish, the team will move on Championship Playoff Bracket play. Clovis Invitational Day 2
Another early morning game as the team headed back to Clovis for second day of tournament play. First up in bracket play was the Kerman High Lions. The team did not start off well as the Lions jumped out to an early 3-6 lead. Then, with the score 5-7, Alex Cogdill served up five straight points to help the team take a 10-7 lead. But, the Lions would battled back to cut the lead to 11-10. Then, with the score 12-10, Dawn Davies served up three straight points to help the team to a 15-10 win. The team started out fast in the next game as they jumped out to an early 4-2 lead. A nice kill by Samantha Surface, a service ace by Avreeta Singh, a Lion hitting error, and suddenly the team had a 7-3 lead. But, the Lions would battle back to cut the lead to 9-7. Then, with the score 10-7, the Lions exploded for eight straight points to pull out a 10-15 win and force a third and deciding game. In the third game, the team started off hot as they jumped out to an early 6-2 lead. But, with the score 8-4, the Lions would score the next seven straight points to take a 6-11 lead. The team did not panic and battled back. With the score 10-13, a kill by Julie Geissert and two kills by Nikki Ciapponi would help the team tie the score at 13-13. Then, with the score tied at 14-14, Julie Geissert served up the next two points in a row to help the team pull out a 16-14 win. With the win against the Lions, the team would move on to the tournament quarter finals. In the quarter finals, the team would face the tough Liberty High Patriots. The first game started out in a see saw battle. Then, with the score tied at 3-3, two kills by Nikki Ciapponi would help the team take a 5-3 lead. But, the Patriots would battle back to tie the score at 6-6. Then, the Patriots would catch fire, going on a 1-9 run to win by a final score of 7-15. The team seemed to fall apart in the second game as the Patriots jumped out to an early 0-8 lead. The team tried to battle back but, fell short as they lost by a final score of 2-15. The team finished the tournament tied for 5th place with an overall record of 4-1. Alex Cogdill and Megan Peranick led the way with a serving percentage of .92 (34 for 37). Julie Geissert led the team with 25 service points followed by Megan Peranick with 23 service points. Nikki Ciapponi led the team with 42 kills followed by Dawn Davies with 20 kills. Nikki Ciapponi led the team with 33 digs followed by Alex Cogdill with 28 digs. Great job team!
