MY WORK FOR LITERACY VOLUNTEERS

I have always had the feeling that it is up to each and every one of us to "Give Back" in some way. Those of us who have had the good fortune to have experienced the "Good Life", love of family, good educations, healthy children, these are the fruits of life. I believe it is our duty to help others who have not had a taste of those fruits.

I chose to work as a volunteer tutor for "Literacy Volunteers of America". I attended a Basic Literacy Workshop at my local library. This workshop consists of eight three hour sessions. The mission of LVA is to promote increased literacy to adult learners through the effective use of trained tutors. Based on the results of the 1992 National Adult Literacy Survey, it is estimated that 21 to 23 % of adult Americans ( that translates to over 200,000 adults in Suffolk County alone) do not have the literacy skills required to fully function in society.

There is a need for tutors here in Suffolk County, a high school diploma is required to become a volunteer. After completion of the workshop, trained tutors are matched to learners. Each volunteer is asked to tutor 2-3 hours a week, for at least one year. The tutoring sessions usually take place at your local library.

I tutored for five years. I found it to be one of the most rewarding experiences I have ever had. To realize that you can help an adult who doesn't have the ability to read a traffic sign or a restaurant menu.Who cannot fill out a job application. After five years Brian was able to write and to read and he won an award from Literacy Volunteers for his amazing accomplishment.
