Henry Edward was born June 2, 1919 at Reliance
to Clem and Anna Schelle Stallman. He grew to manhood on the
family farm southeast of Reliance and attended Cooper School
through the eighth grade. He worked on the family farm until he
was old enough to go east to work for others in Iowa and
Minnesota.
Jan. 3, 1939 Henry married Katherine Lena Thelan
at Breda, Osceola County, Iowa. Katy was born June 24, 1915 at
Breda to Peter and Lena Wessling Thelan.
They farmed at Breda before returning to
Reliance in 1944. He joined the US Navy in 1944 and took his
basic training at Farragut, Idaho, He received a medical
discharge that same year and returned home.
In 1955 they purchased a farm south of Reliance.
Henry farmed the land and worked for others while Katy had her
dairy herd. When she first started out she carried her cream for
the market to the railroad depot in Reliance in cream cans. As
her dairy business progressed she grew with the business by
modernizing the facility and her milk was eventually trucked
from farm to market. Her children worked alongside her with her
cows.
Katy was to learn she had cancer of the liver in
1971 and passed away (within a year's time) on Jan. 8, 1972 at
Chamberlain, Brule County, SD. She is buried in St. Mary's
Catholic Cemetery north of Reliance. Katy was a wonderful woman
and mother, a devout Catholic and raised her children in the
same faith.
After Katy's passing, their home was partially
destroyed by fire. Henry sold the farm and moved to Chamberlain
only to return to Reliance in 1975.
Henry and Viola, 1980
Henry married Viola Dirks Reuer at Gregory,
Tripp County, Feb. 20, 1980. They lived in his trailer until
they had finished remodeling their home. Henry worked for area
farmers and Vi maintained a big garden. For several years Henry
was the maintenance man for the Town of Reliance before
retiring.
Vi passed away in 1999. Henry has moved back to
Chamberlain to be near his doctor. Henry passed away
