American Beauty (1999)

On-the-bone black humour boils over into blistering melodrama as this unflinching portrait of suburban psychosis gathers intensity. As ever, "repressed homosexuality" is a scapegoat for some of the more bizarre behaviour on display, but, if the film is overrated, it's also powerful, enjoyable and a real casting conquest, with Kevin Spacey on particular form.
