The Detective (1968) Frank Sinatra plays a cynical but surprisingly liberal-minded cop investigating the murder of a gay man in New York. With less marital angst involving wife Lee Remick, this might have seemed more like a forerunner of The French Connection rather than Freebie And The Bean, but it's a fascinating social document and one of the earliest Hollywood films to treat homosexuality frankly.
