QUARREL
(G)

~*~

Chakotay and Kathryn sat in silence over breakfast at the small table in their kitchen. They had quarreled the night before, a rare occurrence in their two-year marriage, and resentment hung heavy in the air. Their eyes had not met once while they each prepared their own breakfast, not so much as a nod of good morning had been exchanged.

Kathryn had taken one bite of her poached egg then pushed the plate aside focusing on the padd in her hand. Chakotay skimmed the morning news, his untouched oatmeal growing cold in front of him.

When they reached for the coffee carafe at the same time their fingers met. Eyes finally met as well. Kathryn picked up the carafe and refilled his cup then her own wearing just a hint of a smile. Chakotay put down the padd and looked at her for a long time.

"You are without a doubt the most stubborn woman on this planet," he said softly, only his eyes giving away a secret smile.

"And you were crazy enough to marry me," she countered as she lifted the cup to her lips.

"I was blinded by love."

"Was?"

Chakotay's eyes traveled over her face and he sighed. "Now it's what keeps me alive."
