this is my review of the danny michel show on February 22, 2002, if i may, i'd like to start it out by saying that Danny is utterly perfect. i don't think anyone in the world writes songs as beautiful as danny's.
at first, no one wanted to come to the show with me, just because they didn't know who danny was, so i was going to go alone. then, on thursday night, i convinced my friend Mat to come with me. then, all day in class on friday, i was running around yelling "come to the horseshoe tonight! come to the horseshoe tonight!" a few people said they'd think about it...but no one really said that they would come.
so anyway, my parents ended up driving me down to the club (they wouldn't let me take the subway, because they thought that i'd get murdered LOL. they're paranoid. and they really pissed me off. but whatever.) so i waited for mat, he got there about 5-10 minutes after i did. then, we made our way to the stage area.
the first guy on stage was named Casey Marshall, i think. He was really good. it was just him on stage with his guitar, and he was really talented. Mat and i noticed that every time he would say "thank you" at the end of a song, he'd look over to where we were standing LOL. it was odd. in the middle of the set, Sarah called, and she told me she was going to come to the show! yay! Casey played for about half an hour.
After that, Sarah called and said she was in the club, but i couldn't hear anything at all. LOL, so after much searching, and looking like idiots, we eventually found each other.
So then, a band called The Swallows went on. they, uhh..kinda sucked. a few of their songs were decent, but i really didn't like most of them. a few times during the set, they kinda reminded me of a danko jones/redneck cross. LOL. it got a little tedious at times.
As soon as they finished, Sarah, Mat and I pushed our way to the front of the stage, and we got a spot right in front of Danny's mic. it was so cool when he came to set up his mic. i just got so..giddy. LOL. i was like "eep! its danny! he's standing in front of us!" (i don't think i've ever done that for any other band in my life. LOL) So, someone taped down the set lists, and i took a picture of one of them. It said Kevin at the top, but it was really Kurt Swinghammer's set (he was on the left side of the stage, Kevin Fox was on the right) So anyway. They came on stage, and started to play the intro to Souvenir, but there was this weird humming sound every time they'd play. and they were all looking around like "what is that!?" it was really funny (though i'm sure they didn't think so!)
so finally, they figured it out, and they played the song. The next song they played was Newton's Apple, followed by Toledo, which was so beautiful. Then they played a new song, called Let It Go. Then they played I Don't Wanna Hear It. This was followed up by Bones (one of my favourite songs by danny!), and then Old Tattoo. After that, the band left, and Danny played two solo songs - We're Gonna Be Alright, and a song that he has listed on the setlist as "Games" - i'm not quite sure what that one is...i think it might've been a new one. LOL, in the middle of the solo section, my mom called me on my cell phone to tell me that she was coming to pick me up. LOL, i was so embarassed. i felt like such a fool having to answer my phone in the middle of the concert, especially since i was standing right in front of him.
After that, the band came back on stage, and they played Hartley, followed by Perfect. I'd heard so much about this song from different people who'd seen him play it live...and it is absolutely perfect. i LOVE this song. it's amazing. Next on the setlist, he has a song called "End Of The World"...i think that was a new one too. They ended the set with Coalmine, and then left the stage.
Danny came back for an encore, and played a new song called "katie" solo. it is officially my favourite danny song now, i think. LOL. it was such a great song! After that, the rest of the band came back, and they ended the set with Fireworks.
it was SUCH an amazing concert. there were a few songs that i really wish i could've seen him play - melt, beautiful nothing, snowglobe, elgin ave, whale of a tale, bloody sunday - if i could watch him all night, i gladly would. he is so mezmerizing as a performer. the whole time that i was watching him, i was just totally captivated. he was SO incredible.
ooh, and chrisy was telling me about how danny writes the lyrics to some of his songs on sheets of paper, and i ended up getting the words to the bridge of Katie. i also got a guitar pic, and a setlist. and a whole bunch of pictures (i probably annoyed the shit out of him by taking so many! LOL)
it was a really amazing concert. i strongly advocate going to see him if you haven't already.
