Music Without Borders

Oct. 21, 2001

This was taken from my livejournal, so it's not really a proper review...but it's what happened :P

ahhh, the show kicked ass last night! we got there a little late, so we missed Choclair, but that wasn't bad, cause i didn't want to see him anyway LOL. First thing we did was buy merch. jen and i both bought the blue baby-doll t-shirt, with the music without borders logo on the front, and the bands and date on the back (i'm wearing mine right now! ...i saw a few people at school today with the same shirt LOL)

so when we finally got to our seats (29th row, floors), bruce cockburn was just going on stage. he was cool, just a little too folky for me, cause i was in the mood for a rock'n'roll show! but it still rocked! the coolest was when Steven Page from BNL came out, and they did "Lovers in a Dangerous Time" together..i knew they were gonna do that though, LOL, it was kinda predictable. it sounded really awesome though.

Then Bradford from MuchMusic came to near where we were sitting to introduce the next act..who happened to be the Barenaked Ladies! they KICKED ASS! it was SO much fun seeing them live! They opened with It's All Been Done (i think) and their entire set consisted of singles. it was really cool. When they played If I Had A Million Dollars, i called home on my cell, and i left a message on my phone for my dad, because he *loves* that song LOL. so yeah, when they played, the crowd was TOTALLY into it. BNL and the hip probably had the best crowd reaction throughout the night.

so anyway, then i saw shiny red ayotte drums being wheeled out. LOL, i FREAKED out. i'm like "AHHH! OHMIGOD! THOSE ARE JEREMY'S DRUMS! THOSE ARE JEREMY'S DRUMS!!" LOL, i think the people behind me must've thought i was the biggest freak in the world. So then, at like, 9pm, (right when MuchMusic went to air with the show) George Stroumboulopoulos and Rick Mercer introduced them (and i saw jeremy sitting at his drums while they were introducing, and i was freakin' out some more LOL) They started with Naveed, and i was like *yelling* at the top of my lungs, and i was air drumming through the whole thing. (it must've been really entertaining to be sitting behind me during olp's set!) Then they played their new song, Whatever (which really isn't that new anymore, but i've never seen it live before last night!) Next they went into Starseed, followed by Life. Life got a *Really* good crowd response. everyone was singing along. Next they played my absolute favourite song, Right Behind You. I really freaked out during this song! LOL. After that was Superman's Dead, Thief, and they ended with Clumsy. (i, uhh...wrote down the set. LOL, i'm a dork!)

At one point, Raine made this really touching speech, about War Child, and all the causes that we were contributing to, just by being there. It was really moving. It seemed like Raine was actually holding back tears at different points during the set.

After OLP, it was like i was on a sugar high LOL. i was totally cracked for the rest of the night! Then, Jen's sister noticed that George was nearby, about to film something, so they were trying to get me to go over and say hi, but i was too shy! So then, i told jen that i'd go if she came with me...so she did. so i went over, and i tapped him on the shoulder, and he looked up and he's like "hey you! happy birthday!" (LOL, everyone that was standing near there was like "whooaaa, how did he know it was her birthday!") i said thanks, and i walked behind him (cause the security guards thought that we were just walking by, going back to our seats or somethin' LOL. so then we stood behind george when he taped his little intro thingy. then, after he was done, he walked away with his Much people, and i kinda drummed on his back before i went back to my seat. LOL. the funny part was, Mark from school, was up in the 100 level behind the stage, and he said that HE SAW me from up there LMAO.

then alanis went on, and she really sucked. she doesn't even deserve to be written about. the crowd was like CHEERING when she said that it was her last song. it was SO bad LOL.

then Peter Mansbridge came out, and he gave a little speech, and then introduced "canada's band", the tragically hip! the hip were AMAZING. i can't believe i've never seen them in concert before. they were SO GOOD! they opened with Grace, Too. Then they went on to Music @ Work. Jen really wanted them to play Bobcaygeon, and i really wanted them to play Courage....so imagine our surprise when they played Bobcaygeon, followed by Courage! LOL, it was SO cool! they didn't play my favourite song though...New Orleans Is Sinking. But that's okay, cause they kicked ass anyway! (but i was like, REALLY tired, especially thinking about the fact that i had to be up at 6:30 to be at school on time, and it was already past midnight!)

The end of the show was probably the best part. EVERYONE (all the artists and much music vj's) came out on stage, and they all sang Keep On Rockin' In The Free World by Neil Young. it was SOOOO awesome. Gord Downie did the first verse, Steven Page did the second, and Raine Maida did the third verse. They all sang the chorus together. it sounded SO amazing!! then, towards the end, they got the audience to sing "keep on rockin' in the free world!" and we were SO loud, it was amazing! LOL (that's all i can say...it was AMAZING!) i don't think they really knew the words to the song though...they looked like they were reading off of a teleprompter! LOL.
