Watchmen, Smoother and By Divine Right

November 23, 2001 - Kool Haus

We got there about 10 minutes before Smoother hit the stage...so we went to the washroom, and i set up my mini disc (gosh i love bootlegging!) So then, as we were coming out of the washroom, smoother was just walking out on stage, so i ran up, and i got a front row spot, right near Todd. I got Todd's set list after the show, but they didn't really follow it... They opened with a rockin' version of Good Day. Then, they went into East Coast West Coast (LOL, andrew screwed up the lyrics at the beginning of it ;P) Next they played Rock Her Like A Lion...andrew did a little rap bit in the middle of it (i guess, the part that Beau usually does, andrew filled in) They played French Cigarettes next, followed by an *amazingly beautiful* version of Morgan Le Fay. Next, they played a cute little rendition of Material Girl, followed by East Side (both "poppy" songs in a row...the crowd seemed to like these songs a lot!) After that...my mini disc kinda died on me LOL, so i think they played Snake (DAMMIT, i wanted to get this song live SOOO bad...ARGH!) and their last song was a new one...i guess it's called Maybe Baby, cause that's what it says on the set list....it was really rockin' though. i love it!

The smootherboys were really rockin' on stage though. they looked like they were having tonnes of fun...jumping around all over the place, and just really enjoying themselves. it really got the crowd into it though, even though there weren't that many people there yet...those who were, really enjoyed it, from what i could tell. even my friends that i went with really liked smoother, so YAY! they have 2 new fans ;)

It was really funny though, cause they had no roadies, so they were taking down their own instruments...same with By Divine Right, who were setting up their instruments LOL.

While By Divine Right were finishing setting up, i noticed Ian Thornely from Big Wreck standing near the bar, i didn't go over to talk to him though a-cause he was with a girl, b-cause no one would come with me, c-cause by divine right were about to go on, and d-cause i've already met him before LOL.

So then By Divine Right took the stage. I didn't record their set, cause, well...i didn't really like them too much. But, after they finished, i was totally won over. They played a pretty decent set, and their last song especially was *AMAZING* i don't know what it's called...maybe something about a tree? but anyway, they had this *awesome* percussion section in it. it was SO great. The lead singer kept looking at me and Jen though...he kinda creeped me out LOL. but the worst was the dude who was standing beside me...totally drunk, and falling all over me (he was even worse during the watchmen's set).

Then, after BDR's set, i was dying of thirst, so Jen and I went over to the bar to get a bottle of water...by the time we got back, we couldn't get into our spots that we were at before...and there were these girls who kept whipping their hair in our faces. it was VERY annoying. by the time the show started though, we kinda inched our way over to where jen's sister was. Dean from the edge came out to introduce the watchmen, and then they took the stage. They opened with one of my favourite songs on the new album - Holiday (Slow It Down). Then they played Wiser, followed by another new one, Keep It Together (great song!). Then they played Boneyard Tree, followed by an a cappella little diddy. Next they played a song, that i'm not sure what the title is, but the chorus was something about "wait til you're here..." Next they played another one of my favourites from the new album, I Like It. This annoying girl near me kept saying "GOOD TUNE GOOD TUNE!" and "OH MY GOD! THIS IS MY SONG!" LOL, she was driving me nuts. Then they played another song i don't know the name of...then the band left the stage, and Danny, solo, on piano, played a slow song...chorus was "grown up big and strong , on my way back home..." After that, the band came back, and they played Any Day Now, which sounded SO great. Then, another song i don't know the name of (LOL) Then they played Say Something...and i FRIGGIN love this song. it's got the best drums in it. Danny sang this really pretty little interlude in the middle of it. He's got SUCH a great voice. Then they played another slow one...i *think* it's called No Longer Mine, but i'm not sure...Then Danny sang another a capella thingy, while the band members left the stage. Then they came back and played All Uncovered, and it rocked SO hard. it was good that they switched slow songs with fast ones (LOL, one of the first rules of radio - no two slow songs back to back) Next they played a *really* good version of Stereo. (Jen was waiting for this song all night LOL) The drunken guys kept yelling out "Joey you rock!" and joey just kinda looked at them and smiled oddly LOL. then they "played the one from the radio" ...the song i'd been waiting to hear all night. Absolutely Anytime. i LOVE this song. The whole crowd was singing along. it rocked. At this point, they'd been playing for about an hour and 15 minutes, so they went off stage. The girl in front of us left, so i got to stand in the front row for a little bit ;) Then they came back on stage for their first encore. Then Danny and Joey came out and played a slow song. Then the band came back on stage, and they played Lusitana. it was AMAZING. this is one of my favourite watchmen songs...i can still remember it the first time i saw them play it live...The crowd sang a bunch of the lyrics in the quieter part of the song, the part that goes "is that just the way that i wanna beee" Then they played another song that i'm not sure what it was...then they went off, and when they came out for their second encore. Danny dedicated the first song to Dean from the edge, and had a whole conversation about being jewish (which was what they were talking about that morning on the edge, and it was SO hilarious) I'm not sure what the song was, but i think it was a cover. Then they played a Bob Marley cover of Redemption Song. And then it was over.

The watchmen's stage set up was really minimal...they had lots of floor space to move around, and it was cool to watch. they also had a really good light show, which i notice *every* time i see the watchmen. they always have really nice lights.

I bought an "Absolutely Anytime" watchmen shirt (i love it so much!) i wanted to buy a smoother shirt, but i only had enough for one, and i figured i'd be seeing Smoother more often, so i could buy it next time...i picked up a bunch of postcards and stickers 'n stuff...and i was really happy, cause i FINALLY got a snake postcard of smoother's, cause i could never find them anywhere before!
