This is from the Minister of Defense. I had pointed out
the fact that I have seen over a hundred jets fly over
in one day. I said that some were so low that their
windows could be seen. I also stated that the jets were
mostly white MD-80 passanger jets. Some have been light
grey and some without markings. My main point was that
they were flying at illegal low altitutes.

Dear Mr. Reynolds:
Thank you for your e-mail of October 24, 2000, in which you forwarded copies
of e-mails from Mr. Richard Vizutti and Terry Reed, regarding their concerns
about chemical emissions from aircraft contrails.
As indicated in my letter of September 11, 2000, the Canadian Forces is not
involved in, nor aware of any chemical spraying activity, other than the
crop dusting by farmers, taking place anywhere, including in the Powell
River area. The Department of National Defence (DND) continues to believe
that the phenomena you describe are normal contrails.
In his e-mail Mr. Vizutti mentions the sighting of a low-flying
civilian-patterned light grey aircraft. I am informed that the only DND
aircraft that could fit this description is one of two light grey Challenger
aircraft. Nevertheless, 8 Wing Trenton, 412 Squadron, has confirmed that
these aircraft have not been in the vicinity of Canadian Forces Base Comox
since August 2000.
Finally, with respect to Mr. Vizutti's comments regarding the violations of
flight laws of MD-80 type passenger aircraft, I am advised that DND does not
have any aircraft fitting this description. As the aircraft allegedly
involved in these activities would appear to be commercial passenger jets, I
have taken the liberty of forwarding your letter to the Minister of
Transport, the Honourable David Collenette, as these matters fall within his
responsibility.
Once again, thank you for your representation. I hope the foregoing is of
some assistance in addressing your constituents' concerns.
Sincerely,
Art Eggleton
