The following is a list of men who were listed as natives of regions that are now a part of Canada.
The list is incomplete since not all companies within the Nebraskan regiments seem to have
compiled such information. The source for all of the information on this page was the Official Roster website.
- Allan, Edward W. was a resident of Omaha, Nebraska whose nativity is listed as N. B., which more
than likely stands for New Brunswick. He enlisted as a Private with Company A, 1st Nebraska
Cavalry (the 1st Nebraska Infantry until October 11, 1863) on or about December 1, 1863.
- Baxter, Samuel was a resident of Glenwood, Nebraska who was listed as being a native of Canada.
He enlisted with Curtis' Horse, Company B on September 12, 1861 as a Private at the age of 25.
- Beardshaw, Alexander is listed as having been a resident of Chicago, Illinois when he enlisted with
Company H, 1st Nebraska Cavalry on February 24, 1864 at the rank of Private. His nativity was
Canada. He deserted from the unit.
- Bennorga, Michael was a resident of Ft. Calhoun, Nebraska and is listed as a native of Canada.
He enlisted with Company B, Curtis' Horse on September 16, 1861 as a Private at the age of 26.
- Brown, Harrison was a resident of Omaha, Nebraska who was a native of Nova Scotia. He
enlisted with Company D, 2nd Nebraska Cavalry on October 17, 1862 as a Saddler. At the time of
his enlistment he was 45 years-old. He was disabled during his service.
- Brown, Nelson was a resident of Omaha, Nebraska who was a native of Canada. There are two
references for Nelson Brown. The first places him as a member of Company B, Curtis' Horse,
which was attached to the 5th Iowa Cavalry. He enlisted with this unit on September 14, 1861 as a
Private at the age of 24. A year later, on November 20, 1862, he became a member of Company E,
2nd Nebraska Cavalry, again as a Private, at the age of 25.
- Brown, Stephan J. was a resident of Plattsmouth, Nebraska and is listed as being a native of
Canada. He enlisted with Company A, 1st Nebraska Infantry as a Private on June 11, 1861.
- Bruette, Maurice was a resident of Falls City, Nebraska and is listed as a native of Canada. He
enlisted with Company G, 2nd Nebraska Cavalry on November 24, 1862 as a Private at the age of
43. He died in Falls City on January 19, 1863.
- Calman, Timothy has no place of residence listed, but was a native of New Brunswick. He enlisted
with Company G, 1st Nebraska Infantry on June 30, 1861 and served as the company's Sergeant.
- Capelman, John was a resident of Nebraska City, Nebraska and was a native of Canada West. He
enlisted with Company C, Curtis' Horse on September 9, 1861 as a Private at the age of 26.
- Carter, Nelson G. was a resident of Nebraska City, Nebraska who is listed as being a native of
Canada. He enlisted with Company A, 1st Nebraska Cavalry (the 1st Nebraska Infantry until
October 11, 1863) on December 1, 1863
- Cole, Cyrus was a resident of Bellevue, Nebraska? who is listed as having been a native of Canada.
He enlisted with Company D, 2nd Nebraska Cavalry on October 20, 1862 as a Private at the age of
18.
- Daily, Arson was a resident of Omaha, Nebraska who was a native of New Brunswick. He joined
Company B, 1st Nebraska Infantry as a private on June 18, 1861 and was subsequently transferred
to Company E.
- Egan, Patrick was a resident of St. Paul, Minnesota at the time of his enlistment with Company H,
1st Nebraska Cavalry (formerly the 1st Nebraska Infantry) on February 27, 1864 as Corporal. His
nativity is Canada.
- Evans, George W. was a resident of Plattsmouth, Nebraska whose nativity is listed as Canada
West. He enlisted with Company A, 1st Nebraska Cavalry on August 8, 1864, making him the last
known native of Canada to join the 1st Nebraska Infantry/Cavalry during the war. He later deserted.
- Farnham, A. R. was a resident of Nemaha, County, Nebraska and was a native of Canada West.
He enlisted with Company C, Curtis's Horse on October 12, 1861 as a Farrier at the age of 35.
- Fitzgerald, John was a resident of Omaha, Nebraska whose nativity is listed as Canada. He
enlisted with Company E, 1st Nebraska Infantry on June 18, 1861 at the rank of Private. Fitzgerald
was subsequently promoted to the ranks of Sergeant and Quartermaster Sergeant.
- Fleming, S. B. was a resident of Otoe, County?, Nebraska? whose nativity is listed as having been
Nova Scotia. He enlisted with Company H, 1st Nebraska Infantry on July 3, 1861 at the rank of
Private.
- Floyd, James was a resident of Omaha, Nebraska who was a native of Canada. He enlisted with
Company D, 2nd Nebraska Cavalry on October 17, 1862 as a Private at the age of 22.
- Grave, Lewis was a resident of Brownville, Nebraska who is listed as a native of Canada. He
enlisted with Company E, 2nd Nebraska Cavalry on November 4, 1862 as a Private at the age of 22.
- Gugin, James residence: .... was a native of Canada East who enlisted with Company A, 2nd
Nebraska Cavalry on October 22, 1862 as a Private at the age of 33.
- Gugin, John residence: ... was a native of Canada East who enlisted with Company A, 2nd Nebraska
Cavalry on October 22, 1862 as a Private at the age of 37.
- Herrick, Deforrest was a resident of St. Josephs, Missouri at the time of his enlistment with
Company H, 1st Nebraska Infantry. His nativity is listed as having been Canada. He served as the
company's Corporal and was later promoted to Sergeant.
- Huff, Hiram was a resident of Bellevue, Nebraska who was a native of Canada West. He enlisted
with Company D, 2nd Nebraska Cavalry on October 15, 1862 as a Private at the age of 20.
- Huff, James was a resident of Bellevue, Nebraska who was a native of Canada West. He enlisted
with Company D, 2nd Nebraska Cavalry on October 18, 1862 as a Private at the age of 18.
- Lee, John was a resident of Nebraska City, Nebraska and is listed as having been a native of
Canada. He joined Company D, 1st Nebraska Infantry on June 15, 1861 and apparently began his
service as a Corporal, later being promoted to Sergeant and 1st Sergeant.
- Livingston, Robert R. was a resident of Plattsmouth, Nebraska and is listed as being a native of
Canada. He enlisted on June 11, 1861 as the Captain of Company A, 1st Nebraska Infantry but was
subsequently promoted to Major, Lt. Colonel and Colonel.
- Mann, R. N. was a resident of Glenwood, Nebraska and is listed as having been a native of Canada.
He enlisted with Company B, Curtis' Horse on September 21, 1861 as a Private at the age of 22.
He was killed at the Battle of Cumberland Iron Works, Tennessee on August 27, 1861.
- McAusland Andrew G. was a resident of Omaha, Nebraska who appears to have been the only
native born Newfoundlander to serve with a unit from Nebraska. He enlisted with Company D, 2nd
Nebraska Cavalry on October 17, 1862 as a Private at the age of 18.
- McCormick, John P. residence is unknown and was a native of Nova Scotia. He enlisted with
Company I, 2nd Nebraska Cavalry on November 20, 1862 as a Private at the age of 20.
- Merriman, Charles has no place of residence listed, but was a native of Canada. He enlisted with
Company I, 1st Nebraska Infantry on September 20, 1862, probably at the rank of Private. He later
deserted from the unit.
- Miercier, Julius has no place of residence listed, but was a native of Canada. He enlisted with
Company G, 1st Nebraska Infantry on August 10, 1861 at the rank of Private. He later deserted.
- Moore, Calvin P. was a resident of Omaha, Nebraska whose nativity was recorded as C. W., which
almost certainly stands for Canada West. He enlisted with Company E of the 1st Nebraska Cavalry
(the 1st Nebraska Infantry prior to October 11, 1863) and was the unit's 1st Sergeant.
- O'Brien, James W. was a resident of Mt. Vernon, Nebraska? and is listed as having been a native
of Canada East. He joined Company C, 1st Nebraska Infantry on June 15, 1861, but later deserted.
- Richey, Joseph E. was a resident of Clarina, Iowa whose nativity is listed as Canada. He enlisted
with Company F, 1st Nebraska Infantry on June 24, 1861 and served as the company's Corporal, 1st
Corporal and 2nd Corporal.
- Roy, Joseph L. was a resident of Brownville, Nebraska who is listed as a native of Canada East.
He enlisted with Company E, 2nd Nebraska Cavalry on October 29, 1862 as a Private at the age of
28.
- St. Pierre, Abraham was a resident of Falls City, Nebraska and is listed as a native of Canada. He
enlisted with Company G, 2nd Nebraska Cavalry on November 8, 1862 as a Private at the age of 23.
- Saunte, Daniel was a resident of Decanter, Nebraska who is listed as having been a native of New
Brunswick. He enlisted with Company A, Omaha Scouts on March 18, 1865 at the age of 24. His
rank is given as 4th Corporal.
- Stephens, John was a resident of Nebraska City, Nebraska who is listed as having been a native of
Nova Scotia. He joined Company D, 1st Nebraska Infantry on June 11, 1861 at the rank of Private.
- Stephens, Peter residence is not listed and was a native of Canada. He enlisted with Company G,
2nd Nebraska Cavalry on November 6, 1862 as a Private at the age of 22.
- Stillwell, R. M/N. was a resident of Ft. Calhoun, Nebraska and was a native of Canada. He enlisted
with Curtis' Horse on September 17, 1861 as a Private at the age of 56. Initially a member of
Company B, he was later transferred to Company H.
- Stillwell, R. B. was a resident of Ft. Calhoun, Nebraska and was a native of Canada. He enlisted
with Curtis' Horse on September 17, 1861 as a Private at the age of 22. Initially a member of
Company B, he was later transferred to Company H.
- Stillwell, J. A. was a resident of Ft. Calhoun, Nebraska and was a native of Canada. He enlisted
with Curtis' Horse on September 17, 1861 as a Private at the age of 17. Initially a member of
Company B, he was later transferred to Company H.
- Swatman, E. A. was a resident of Omaha, Nebraska whose nativity was Canada. He joined
Company F, 1st Nebraska Infantry on June 24, 1861 at the rank of Private. He later deserted.
- Towers, J. B. was a resident of Omaha, Nebraska who was a native of New Brunswick. He
enlisted with Company B, Curtis' Horse on September 21, 1861 as a Private at the age of 27.
- Travey, William was a resident of Omaha, Nebraska who was a native of Canada. He enlisted
with Company B, Curtis' Horse on September 21, 1861 as a Private at the age of 18.
- Welch, Alexander was a resident of Omaha, Nebraska whose nativity is listed as Canada. He
enlisted with Company E, 2nd Nebraska Cavalry on January 6, 1863 as a Private at the age of 27.
- Young, Hiram was a resident of Nebraska City, Nebraska and is listed as having come from
Canada. He joined Company D, 1st Nebraska Infantry on June 10, 1861 at the rank of Private.
