My personnal memories of the Portsmouth Youth Tourney!

YES...this worn out and weathered plastic card is MY Tournament tag from a couple of bunch of years ago!  It sure brings back some great memories of my first youth tournament experience.

To this day I still remember the huge adrenaline rush that overtook me when I walked into the Bowl-O-Rama for my very first time!  My blood pressure almost doubled and my heart rate went wild instantly when I saw the entire 34 LANE CENTER jam-packed to capacity. For a kid that grew up in a quiet 14 lane center the energy and excitement flowing in the air was simply incredible to see!

I became totally hooked on the game after that memorable weekend on . That event developed a great desire to become a "big-time" competitive bowler. Almost all of my free time was spent practicing at my home lanes.

Unfortunately a bad auto accident a few years after the tourney cancelled my plans to try and become another great lefty like Peter Flynn. It took me away from the game physically but it didn't steal the passion for the game that had grown in my heart .

I can honestly say that the fun and positive influences I had in my younger years kept me involved in the sport today. For that I am very greatful because I would have missed out on a whole lot of fun now!

Nothing is more fun and rewarding to me these days than working with the youngsters and watching their game develop week after week.

My return to the big tournament

In 2001, I finally returned to the center I had visited 19 years earlier.  I must have spent a good hour looking around marveling at the changes made to the center since the last time I visited.

One thing that never changed was the excitement in the huge crowd of bowlers and spectators. My new role as a proud dad, coach and spectator was so much fun........and
NO PRESSURE ON ME!

This is how the bowling center appears today.
Seems like every time we visit the Bowl-O-Rama
there are new upgrades or changes being made!

Here's a little quiz for you!
Do you see any differences in the lanes between this last picture
and the 50's picture on the "BLAST TO THE PAST" page?  Look closely!

(hint - it's not the masking units - AKA Venetian blinds or wooden / plastic pins either)

email us with your answer if you think you know.
