CHRIS SARGENT VS. SHAWN BAKER
The record day on WNDS TV 50's Candlepin Stars & Strikes which aired on March 6th, 2005
_____________________________________________________________________________

To be honest, we almost missed this incredible match!
After Bart Maderios lost to Sargent in the previous match we were ready to pack up our gear and get heading home. It was about 2:45 PM and the perfect time to beat the commuter traffic that would soon overload Rt.101 in Nashua NH.

As I put my camera in my bag I said to myself,
" SELF... what the heck are you doing?  This match is probably going to be
a dandy to watch.....Sarge and Baker.....two of the hardest throwers in the game
....It don't get any better than this! "

THE BAKER BOY!

Shawn Baker, an electrician by trade, thought he had the day off from work.
Little did he know how SHOCKED he would be after the first game of this match.

Baker was down by 89 pins after game 1!

If you watched the match though you'd never would have known it !
Baker kept his head up and gave 100% through the entire match.

A GREAT lesson for our young readers out there.

One unfortunate thing in this game that we all must face is
WHEN IT'S NOT YOUR DAY - IT'S JUST NOT YOUR DAY!

Even the best of em' have those days.
Baker was able to poke fun at himself over the situation.
It could have easily been the other way around that day.

The
"GAME FACE"

We' ve seen Sarge bowl many times in many different situations
and THIS was probably the most serious we have ever seen him!

The pins were flying for him this match and he couldn't do any wrong.
ANY BALL on the headpin was almost a definite guaranteed mark

EXCEPT FRAME #7 of the first game
Sarge missed a spare?.......How'd that happen?

Things definitely went Sarge's way!

Sarge rolled a triple strike to add another $875.00 to his prize money
The total winnings amounted to $2700.00

Sportsmanship is one thing BUT.....

NEVER touch your opponent after a match.
BAD LUCK rubs off very easily!

One of the greatest lessons that Sarge learned
from dad, the legendary Mike Sargent (seated)

JUST KIDDING!

I don't think Chris actually realized what happened
until the match was all over. The crowd did though
and they let him know about it with a big applause!

His 193 string and 497 triple have set the mark on the show.
That is gonna be TOUGH to beat!

A chip off the ol' block!

There's no doubt that Chris will join his father and the rest
of the elite members in the ICBA Candlepin Hall Of Fame

For now though Chris does join his dad in the
State and World Record Books
That is a tremendous accomplishment in itself

HOW IRONIC?

The one man who would know how Sarge felt that day just happened to be in the crowdat the TV taping. That's right.....Paul "Mr. 500" Berger was there to see Sarge roll his career best under the lights.

Berger just returned to the area after relocating to Colorado for number of years.  He will long be remembered for the only 500 triple on the old CH 5 Candlepin Bowling Show back on May 2, 1992.

He was no stranger to the Star's & Strikes show either with many appearances
in the late 80's and early 90's as well as many Tournament of Champions series

Paul mentioned to us that day that he really wants to get back into the game now that he's back in New England permanently. After that first taping he just witnessed we'll bet Berger's bowling blood is really flowing in his veins!  Welcome back Paul!

BTW - Thanks again "Mr 497" & "Mr 500" for autographing my candlepin!
The two highest TV totals in history LOOKS AWESOME!
