      April 18  1861: Virginia militia under Kenton Harper take possession of Harper's Ferry following the Federal
                                 evacuation of the city and burning armory.   
     June 15 1861: Harper's Ferry evacuated.
     June 20 1861: Troops previously of this command re-organized into Army of the Shenandoah.

      April 20 1861: Embraced all military and naval forces of the state of Virginia.
      May 10 1861: Maj. Gen. Robert Edward Lee's  authority was extended over Confederate forces operating in Virginia.
      June 8 1861: Virginia State Troops were transferred to the authority of the Confederate States.
      August 1 1861: Lee assumed supervisory command of troops operating in western (now West) Virginia.

      August 12 1861: Re-organized into Army of the Kanawha.

      February 9 1862: Following the Western Virginia Campaign, a harsh winter and  low morale, command was disbanded.
                                  The majority of its troops were absorbed into Maj. Gen. Thomas J "Stonewall" Jackson's  Valley District.
ARMY OF THE SHENANDOAH Brig. Gen. Joseph E  Johnston June 20 1861-20 July 20 1861
      20 June 1861: Embraced troops previously stationed in and near Harper's Ferry.
      20 July 1861: Merged into Army of the Potomac under immediate command of Gen. Joseph E. Johnston
ARMY OF THE KANAWHA   Brig. Gen. John Buchanan Floyd   August 2 1861-December 1861
     August 12 1861: Embraced troops in western Virginia in the area around Lewisburg.
     September 25 1861: Rivals Brig. Gen. John Buchanan Floyd commands,  Henry  Alexander Wise, transferred.
     December 1861: Gen. Robert Edward Lee  dissolves command and the transfer of Floyd to Central Army of Kentucky.
