WILLIAM A. JACKSON
WILLIAM A. JACKSON was born 1806 in Fredericksburg, Virginia, and in 1860 was a coal dealer at Malden, (West) Virginia. At the outbreak of the war he was commanded a 100-man Home Guard of Charleston, (West) Virginia. Lieutenant colonel of the 22nd Virginia Infantry by General John B. Floyd on November 7,1861, following the resignation of Colonel Tompkins and because of the status of Lieutenant Colonel Patton as an exchange prisoner. Prior to Jackson's appointment the regiment was briefly led by Major Isaac N. Smith.   (F&S)

Jackson wrote a letter to Colonel Tompkins on November 19, 1861, and told him that Floyd had appointed him lieutenant colonel; Jackson requested the influence of Tompkins in securing that commission, appointed December 21,1861. Soldiers of the 22nd Virginia indicated that Jackson was not well liked. Captain Andrew R. Barbee said that he was insulted by Jackson and was refused to serve under him. Colonel John McCausland often led the regiment while Jackson was in command.

At the regimental reorganization on May 1, 1862, Jackson was dropped and replaced as lieutenant colonel by Andrew R. Barbee. He later served as lieutenant colonel of the 4th Virginia State Line and was recom mended for commandant at Dublin Depot on October 10, 1863. Jackson also served In the Nitre and Mining Bureau. Died Jan. 15, 1875 at Pulaski
