Jupiter can be veiwed as a star that failed. Had it been just slightly hotter in the core of this massive planet,thermonuclear reactions would have begun to take place,and shoot out visible light. We would be a binary system. Although not in visible light,Jupiter is in some senses,a star.
Jupiter has been known of since prehistory,and the fact that it was bright and it's motion through the sky was most likely what led the ancients to name it after the king of the gods.
