SkyQuest 2 Bulletin #7 Friday 06/19/98
Things are still quite busy with the May 30 balloon project with
followups required to various outlets to let the world know
how the launch came out.
There is also a "learning curve" involved with this new instrument
so a lot of what is being created now in the way of special
software and tables will be all ready to use again on a subsequent
flight using the same or similar instrumentation.
The following is the data necessary to convert the audio frequency
from the transmitter to inside and outside temperature. Building
this table required a bit of computer and mathematical gymnastics, so
it was only completed yesterday.
I'm pleased to announce that the better tape of only two known to
exist, made by Ron Moniz, K1CI, of Tiverton, RI will yield very useable
temperature data from about 12 to 50 minutes elapsed flight time.
Because of the signal getting a little noisy at times, we're having
to use the frequency determining method of driving an oscilloscope
with a variable audio signal and the output of the tape -- seeking a
stationary pattern. This method (Lissajous figures) is very nice for
visually rejecting off-frequency noise, but it's labor intensive
compared to snapping readings with a frequency counter.
