Comments: I think it'll be interesting to see what comes out of this
WebTV/Microsoft deal, although i'm not one for a monopoly type
empire like Gates. As far as the price of the terminal? I was
overwelmed by the $250. price I paid 4-5 months ago. I'm a pay
check too pay check type spender (mostly bills) I thought $250. was
to good to pass up. One thing that dissturbs me about WebTV-I
can't remember when the last upgrade was,but it seems that just one
 upgrade & $120. 6mth charge is'nt fair.... I had better pawn this
terminal while it's still worth something! SORRY WebTV but trying
to be the first on the market with no backbone & collecting $$$
meanwhile is gonna run you into the ground when your competitors
cast thier shadows upon you. Hopefully you'll get lucky when Mr.
Gates steps in with his shovel.

Comments: I prefer the Yahoo search engine overall to give me
more hits that actually match what I put in, but the Lycos search
engine is EXCELLENT if you are looking for a particular image or
midi. I think WebTv's best way to improve their financial situation is
to get the upgrades out and the bugs out of the system! Our
word-of-mouth as users of the service do more to sell new units than
the sales clerks who generally don't have a clue. I went down to
Sears yesterday with a friend to buy his. I also think that they should
do like the little satellite dish companies...sign up for a year's
pre-paid service and get a free unit.

Comments: sony is probably a bigger company than philips. All the
webtv advertising i've seen on television has been by philips.sony has
to get moving and use its resources to promote webtv as an
alternative to the computer for surfing the net. Sony sells a lot of tvs
why not promote webtv by discounting it with a coupon or other
method when a consumer buys a tv or vcr? Sony just may repeat
itself when they let the betamax die a slow agonizing death in the
early 80's,when by far it was a better product than the vhs vcr(i still
own 2 betamaxes and i swear by them).By slacking in their
promotion of webtv they are not supporting the product or
 considering a write-off. On a previous posting i insisted that we can't
let the government to get its big foot in controlling the con- tents of
the internet. The requirement of a v chip is the first step...we dont
need this!!!! parents and the current voluntary tools such as netnanny
and surfwatch are sufficient if we feel some sites are tasteless or
dangerous to young mindS!!! MY favorite search engine is
metasearch. From one page you hace access to search the same
 phrase in
 YAHOO,ALTAVISTA,WEBCRAWER,LYCOS,INFOSEEK and
at least two others i can't recall now

Comments: re Q3: V-chip The v-chip is a feeble attempt to make
up for the lack of parenting in the U.S. If kids are still getting ahold of
the XXX movies and magazines, then finding it on the internet
shouldn't be any surprise to the parents of the kids that have been
caught with the magazines under their beds. Assuming that this chip
will fix the problem will only give a false sense of security to the
parents, and greater opportunity for the kids to get away with it.
There will always be a friend who doesn't have proper parenting next
door, and your kid will be able to go to their house to use his
technology to access adult material while you are sitting at home,
quite proud of you new v-chip! It is only when we start to educate
parents on how to be parents that any real attempt be made to keep
 adult material away from children.

Comments: In response to george and his comments about poor
sales of Web Tv. I don't know about any poor sales of Web Tv
since this product came out in Oct of 1996. the total sales of
Phillips Magnavox and Sony Web Tv are over 500.000 units which
is not bad for seven months. Additionally sales were so hot that after
Xmas of 1996, Web Tv pulled all of thier advertising on Television
and in the print media for about six weeks because the product
needed little advertising because orders were backed up all over The
United states. Web Tv has been a huge commercial success contrary
to what George syas. I don't know where he's getting his info from,
however Web Tv is here to stay, for sure.
