Comments: Losing 26 mil. concerns me to say the least. $400.00
(including keyboard) may not be a lot of $ for some people, but it is
to me. That sounds like a lot of $ to lose for just 9 months.

problem solving ability...hallmarks of the seriously gifted! Kudos! I'm
sorry I didn't get to your site sooner and participate in the survey.
My disconnect problem was solved when I replaced the box and
had the phone company check the lines inside and out. However, I
do not think I have often stayed inactive for thirty minutes, so I don't
have any information on that. My husband reports that he has
experienced disconnects on occasion when it is very windy. That
would, I think, indicate a line problem. Again thank you for all your
 thought, time and effort. Dale

Comments: Hi Pete, couldn't find an email address for you
anywhere, so I thought I'd leave you a note here. I participated in
this week's survey yesterday (Tuesday, May 13), and left a couple
of comments regarding some of the WebTV questions posed in the
survey. Got a nasty, insulting email this morning (Wed., May 14)
from a guy named Randall Smith (TheCrip@webtv.net) in response
to my comments. My comments were very upbeat and directed at
WebTV with some ideas on how to improve sales. Anyway, Mr.
Smith took exception to my comments in a very mean-spirited way,
calling me a few choice names. I think a direct response to Mr.
Smith would only exacerbate the problem, so I thought I'd just pass
this on to you, for what it's worth. I can email the letter to you if you
would send me your email address. Just one of the negatives of the
Web, I guess, it's a shame one can't make positive comments
without getting insulted like that. BTW, are the survey comments
forwarded to WebTV? I guess that's what I had in mind when I
wrote them. Anyway, just thought I'd let you know, thanks for a very
 informative Homepage!

Comments: im concerned about the future of WEBTV,considering
the news of its losses up to dec 31,1996. i hear that only 50,000
units were sold during the christmas season, and that there have been
substantial returns to retailers. Even though i saw a survey result that
stated that most webtv units were sold between the months of
december and january, with the revenue of the additional subscribers
during that time probably not reflected in the filing report to the
SEC,I still feel the company is not going to survive. When one
considers that the executives of WEBTV had left positions with
major computer companies, probably with the hope of being able to
create something that would not be in the shadow of the
giants;something that they could call their own contribution to society
in the spirit of american entrepeneurship, wether for financial or
satisfaction of ego reasons;and then turn around 6 months after its
actual implementation amd introduction into the market place;and sell
it to one of the giants...that's an indication that something is not going
well..Is that why upgrades have been so few and far
 between?...gosh!..I hope I'm wrong!!!

Comments: I think if the new owners of WEBTV would direct a
large sum of money toward advertising, they would make more
people aware of their product. I don't mean advertising only in trade
magazines but in newspapers,tv and non-trade papers. If you will
notice Sony didn't do much (if any) advertising on tv, it was always
Magnavox who was on tv, but that was far and in between also. The
only way I heard of WEBTV was through the trade papers which
 we get at work

Comments: Concerning the price reduction, I think it was a good
idea. I think an eventual price of $199 or even $149 should be
considered. WebTV should be right in the video game system
ballpark, so it can go head-to-head with those units. Also think of
marketing it in a package deal with certain TVs, like buy this model
TV, and surf the Internet for only this much more or something like
that. If there was just one employee in each dealer store who owned
a WebTV or knew how to get around on one pretty well, and then
could concentrate somewhat on selling WebTVs from a
well-displayed unit, this baby would move! I was in a Sears playing
with a P-M unit and was showing everybody how to chat with others
 all over the country on a 32 Sony TV! I know it's a lower-ticket
item, but it should be selling like hotcakes with the right push. Don't
give up on this thing! Price and position it right, get someone
knowledgable behind it, add popular updates and fix minor bugs,
and you should have a winner on your hands! I've even heard talk of
current owners doing in-store demos. Not a bad idea!

Comments: Although $26.1 million is a pretty hefty loss, I think a
somewhat significant loss in the first year of operation is normal for a
cutting-edge venture such as this. I'm more concerned about how
WebTV markets its product and gets it in front of the public. I
certainly see little enthusiasm for the product in the stores that sell it,
and store visibility is lousy. WebTV really needs to find its own
niche, and I hope the marketing dept. beefs up its efforts to put
WebTV solidly on the map. The computer for the rest of us, now
that's a start. There's definitely a market for WebTV, it just has to be
established. Also, continuing updates, albeit not always timely, are
encouraging to current owners, who represent a large marketing
base through word-of-mouth. Let's all get behind this thing and
push!! And keep up the good work, thank you!
