The Seasons

Review: Planet Earth has seasons because our axis of rotation is tilted in relation to the path of its orbit around the Sun. This causes changes in both the angle of the light where it reaches the surface, and in the length of daylight  as the the Earth revolves around the Sun.  For example, on the day of each year when the planet's North Pole and Northern Hemisphere are angled toward the Sun the most, we get the most energy from the Sun because that is the longest day of the year and the light shines down on the surface the most directly of any other day. This is the called the Summer Solstice and is the first day of Summer, around June 21.  Click the diagrams below for more information.
