When the first fighter squadron added the more advanced Mustang to its inventory in 1948, most pilots preferred the Spitfires. They soon learned to appreciate the Mustang's excellente range and loiter capabilities. It bombed and strafed ground targets and scored its first IAF victory over a Mosquito in the South in 1948. Mustangs flew into the jet era. They are still remembered for their daring mission during the 1956 Sinai Compaign when cut Egyptian telephone lines using special cables and even their own propellers and wings.
