The 1967 French embargo was a turning point
in the history of the Israel aircraft industries. After embarking on the
local production of the Nesher, based on the Mirage 5, the IAI refitted
a two seat Mirage 3-B with a General Electric J-79 engine which powers
the F-4 Phantom. The result, which first flew in 1970, demonstrated its
capability during a series of mock dogfights against both Mirages and Phantoms
in 1972.
