Dreams of Tomorrow

Part 17

No-one seems surprised when you decide to return to Earth. The coldness and disappointment of the other Tomorrow People when they looked at you was too much for you and, besides, you have to admit that they might be right. In the short time since you broke out you've barely had time to get used to all that it involves. You can't see how membership of the Galactic Federation benefits Earth but then perhaps you haven't been here long enough to learn. If the others truly believe that what they're doing is right, and they clearly do, then who are you to argue?

Elizabeth, TIM and the others are sombre when you jaunt back to the Lab. They try to listen to your arguments but you can tell that they don't understand them. To the other Tomorrow People being members of the Galactic Federation is part of what they are. You can see some of their points. The technological help, the relief of having other telepaths to call upon, the importance of your emergent world not being isolated, all those things are valuable, you can see. But you believe that you arguments about the danger of your powers being abused are more important.

You don't sleep in the Lab that night and nor do you return the following day. It isn't really something you've thought about or discussed with the others but you feel that you have given up your right to call the Lab home. You know that the others will call you when the decision has been made. You are under no illusions that you'll be permitted to remain on Earth if the others are forced to leave. In fact, you know that leaving Earth may be the best thing you can do for it. Despite that you long to stay.

And so you wait, taking each day as it comes. The world seems somehow more beautiful since you've realised that your time on it may be limited. You marvel each morning at the sunrise and spend each day in awe of the natural world around you.

One day, soon, John will walk through your door and either order you to leave or let you know that you were wrong.

All you can do is wait and hope.

You don't know any more which you're hoping for.
