This special issue of Acta Oecologica consists of papers from a regional Iberian conference on benthic ecology organised on behalf of the Institute or Marine Research (IMAR), Portugal. It includes 25 contributions from 50 researchers. As a whole, the issue provides a good demonstration of the range of topics that meet each other in this habitat. The issue is organised in five sections: i) Biogeochemical Processes; ii) Population Dynamics and Productivity; iii) Structure and Function of Benthic Communities; iv) Trophic Organisation and Interactions and v) Methodological Contributions.
