Special Pawn Powers

Captures en passant or "in passing" are a special option which a player
can exercise when any of his Pawns has reached a certain point.
This is possible only if all of the following conditions are present:
  1. The Pawn that will do the capturing must be on its fifth rank.
  2. The Pawns involved must be on adjacent files.
  3. The Pawn that will ultimately be captured must still be on its
second (original) rank (see diagram 1).
  4. Tha Pawn that is to be captured advances two squares (see diagram 2).
  5. In reply, the opposing Pawn captures the first Pawn as if it had advanced
only one square (see diagram 3).

DIAGRAM 2

Black exercises his right to advance two squares on his initial move.

DIAGRAM 3

White has captured in passing as if Black's Pawn had only advanced one square and had been captured in the normal manner.

Usually capturing en passant is optional, but if a player does not
capture in passing immediately (right after the opponent moves a Pawn
two squares on its initial move), than he loses his option.

There is one instance when capturing en passant is compulsory.

  • If the only way to get out of check is by means of such a capture, than
    the capture must be made.

There is also one instance when capturing en passant is not allowed.

  • If capturing en passant would expose one's own King to attack (ie. to check), than the capture cannot be made.
