The Moves

The King

The King moves one square in any direction (see diagram). It cannot leap over any other piece.
The King captures the same way it moves. When it captures an enemy piece
it displaces that piece (occupies the square of the captured piece).

In this example White's King has 8 possible moves, indicated by dots.

White's King can capture either Black's Rook or his Knight.
Note that White's Pawn blocks the King from moving to that square.

There are some exceptions to the rules concerning the King's movement.
They are discussed in the check and checkmate section which you should visit
after you learn about all of the pieces' movement rules.
