Hebrew Name | "Aluf" | "Tat-Aluf" | "Aluf-Mish-ne" | "Sgan-Aluf" |
USAF | Major General | Brig. General | Colonel | Lt. Colonel |
RAF | Air Vice Marshal | Air Commodore | Group Captain | Wing Commander |
Armee de L'air | General de Division Aerienne | General Brigade Aerienne | Colonel Captain | Lt. Colonel |
Typical Posts - IAF | IAF Commander (The highest rank in the IAF) | AF Base Commander, Chief of Staff (Vice OC.), Head of an IAF-H.Q Branch, Chief of the A.A Corps, etc. | IAF: Wing Commander, Head of an IAF-H.Q Department, Commander of an AA Regiment, etc. | IAF: Squadron Leader, Head of an IAF-H.Q Section, Senior Staff Officer of an AFB/Wing, A-A battalion commander, etc. |
Note: the rank of "Tat-Aluf" (Brig. General) was established in 1968. Till then the
equivalent posts were manned one rank below, thus Squadron Leaders and Wing / Base commanders were Majors and Lt. Colonels, respectively. Actually the new rank was very rare
in the IAF for several years after. Only in 1971/2 were changed the manning tables to those
described. In the case of the Vautour, the first Sqn. 110 commander to be appointed as
Lt.Col. was M. Yeshurun, the last of the Vautours commander.
It is also important to mention that till the mid. sixties promotion to a higher rank
( in the range of senior officers) was conditioned by a full year of service in the
post prior to awarding the rank. For example - Colonel Ezer Weitzman was for
one year (1958-1959), the IAF Commander, before given the rank of "Aluf".
