Posiblemente fue el primer diseño de un helicóptero tipo "Flying Crane". Similar al FA-223 pero un 50 % más grande. Después de que muchas de sus partes fueron construidas el diseño fue abandonado. |

Professor Focke had wanted to move the concept of using a helicopter as a heavy transport further forward ever since the cargo lifting variant of the Fa 223 had been designed. His ideas were to lead to the development of the Fa 284 'Sky Crane' - a helicopter capable of lifting outsize and awkward loads, for civil and military use. It wasn't until Sikorsky built their own version of Focke's original specification in the 50s that observers could appreciated just how far ahead of his time Focke had been with this concept. Here was a craft capable of carrying artillery pieces and tanks, as well as men and their equipment, directly to the battlefield, without the need of runways - even gliders needed a landing strip of some kind. Research has turned up two designs that both share the designation Fa 284. For the initial design
Professor Focke designed a fuselage that was designed to provide ample
clearance to position it self over the item that was to be transported,
such as a vehicle or bridge section. Besides the pilots cockpit a
secondary removable cockpit was attached to the lower rear of the craft
to enable a crew member to monitor and control the items being carried.
It was also envisioned that a removable storage container could be
attached below the fuselage and be used to transport stored or crated
items. The front of the storage container could be opened much like the
clam shell doors on the massive Messerschmitt
Me-323. Professor Focke
envisioned the Fa-284
to provide a variety of support functions. Thanks to German Helicopters |
