In 1935, under an accelerating rearmament program the German Air ministry issued a requirement for a utility/liaison aircraft. Focke-Wulf decided to enter the competition with an autogyro, instead of a fixed-wing airplane. They built and flight tested the FW-186 autogyro which was similar to, but built more streamlined than the Cierva C,30 which Focke-Wulf had been building and improving under license. Although the competition was won by a fixed wing aircraft, the Fieseler Fi-156 Storch and further development of the FW-186 was stopped, Heinrich Focke had gained much valuable experience and Focke soon realized that the autogyro with its unpowered rotor had serve operating limitations.
