This week I have decided to talk about commercialized holidays.
While I was in a local store last week I saw that they were already
selling their Christmas decorations. "This is odd," I thought to
myself. After I thought about it for a while, I realized that the
sacred holiday that was Chirstmas is now "X-mas." Where did the Christ
go? It is obvious that retailers are not interested in the real
meaning of Christmas, but are only interested in making a few extra
dollars.
What ever happened to the good old days when "Christmas things"
went on sale the day after Thanksgiving? Are these retailers making
any extra money because they are selling the stuff a month earlier?
I doubt it. When I first see the lights on the shelves I get a bit
excited, but after a while I lose interest and they are taken for
granted and people lose sight of what Christmas is all about.
Christmas is not about getting or making money. Christmas is about
God sending his son to forgive the sins of the world. People try to
reenact this giving at Christmas, and unfortunately retailers take
advantage of this giving attitude.
This apathy toward the meaning of the most sacred holiday of all
for Christians has led to people not thinking of those who need help
but thinking only of themselves and not giving charitably. Whether
you believe it or not retailers attitudes rub off on people and if
the retailers display a selfish attitude toward Christmas then so
will the general public.
