I heard on the news that a school system will not be forcing their teachers to learn a new dialect of the English language called Ebonics. Not only is this a stupid idea, but it would be the biggest step backwards in civil rights since the slave ships brought Aficans to the Americas. If there is to be total equality between blacks and whites then they will have to speak standard American English. To force teachers to learn a different language so that students will be able to understand them is wrong. If a student is having trouble understanding a teacher that is speaking standard english then that student needs to learn standard English. Now that television and movies have become so popular the English language should be unifying to form a single language, and not separating into different languages. Why then is a diffence in the language developing? Many African Americans may be using this slang that they speak as a way of defining themselves from the Whites, but it does prevent them from having the same educational capabilities as the Whites. Once again education is the key. Education is what will allow a person to advance in society. The opportunities are available, but they must be taken advantage of. If you are an African American and think that being in a gang will allow you to advance in life then come to grips and realize that the gangs are what cause most "Whites" to fear the you. African Americans will no longer be seen as savages, but rather as well educated individuals. |
