My mother is an obsessive compulsive cleaner. She thinks that if
something is not perfectly clean then it is the dirtiest and most
vile thing on the face of the planet. She manages to wear out a vacuum
cleaner in no less than a year and uses up windex faster than a greenhouse.
If she is not sleeping, which is at most six hours a day, then she is
cleaning. When she plans a "little" party for her "friends" she cleans
the paint off the walls.
When my brother-in-law comes over in the
week before the get together finger prints and smudges invariably
find themselves behind the various pictures and such on the walls.
He checks again during the party and he never finds one of his little
test marks. She has removed them because as we all know that every time
you go over to someone's house the first and most polite thing you should
do is to check behind their pictures to see if there is something back there
that shouldn't be there. When her family was coming over for a little thing in the
yard she insisted on scrubbing out the cupboards as if her family was
going to go into the kitchen and insult her for having cupboards that
were not scoured.
If you are going out of your way to satisfy someone then that person
is not right for you and you need to find somebody who likes you for
who you are and not because you have clean cupboards. If you are and
obsessive compulsive cleaner because you are paranoid then you have a
completely different problem and that will be the subject of a different
Evil of the Week.
