The local news has been having a hayday with Cleveland Mayor Micheal White's crack down on racists in the police department. There were reports of hate symbols and messages being painted all over (or that's the way the news makes it sound) four of Cleveland's police stations. A former officer who lead a racist organization for "African American" officers announced that there are racists in the police department and some of them have been promoted to fairly high positions. I was pleased that he was also stated that all of the racist officers were not caucasian.
When I look at events like this I am reminded of a time in our history when people go overboard in trying to find evils. Two particular events are the Salem Witch Trials and the Communist hunts of the 1950's. In Salem people lost control because they blew every little thing out of proportion and made it look like those poor people were witches. In the 50's everyone was afraid of communism because of the announcement that the Soviets had the bomb. People were looking for communism so they found it. This kind of paranoia is not uncommon, but we should be able to see it coming. We are not able to control the thoughts of others. Whether you believe that there is no god or that wealth should be spread evenly from those that work hard to those that work not, you should be allowed to think whatever you want. If you have an unjustified fear or hatred of someone then you should be allowed to have that hatred or fear.
The answer to most of society's ills is education not legislation. The answer to all forms of drug abuse is education, the answer to racism/sexism is education, and the answer to and pre/extramarital sex is education. One ill, abortion, is murder and therefore should be illegal. I know that we live in an instant loving society, but often the slow way is definitely the better way. Which tastes better, Grandma's lovingly prepared cookies, the kind that comes off a roll then is trown into the oven, or the kind that comes from a box pre-baked?
I would also like to remind people that when the KKK comes to Cleveland on the same day that the new Browns stadium is opened that you should stay away and ignore it. That is how we can stop them. If nobody hears their message then it cannot spread.
Remember:
"You can't legislate morality." - unknown
