Of course the entire world is abuzz with Olympic mania, but I have to ask where are the sports? I do not have cable so I have been watching the broadcast through the air waves, and the coverage is not all that great. I do not know if their cable counterpart has been doing a better job, but I have mostly seen ads and human interest stories. Aren't the Olympics supposed to be about the world coming together in peace to compete on a level playing field?
I think that maybe a third of the air time is devoted to airing actual competitions. Another third is made up of commercials, and the rest is nothing more than silly filler. There are touching stories about every insignificant athlete who went to Sidney. There was another story about how the Japanese beat up on the Australians in WWII and a lot of talk from the commentators in some studio far from the venues. This is not localized to this network's coverage of the summer games, the network that covers the winter games does the same thing, and the networks that don't carry the coverage tell you the results before the coverage airs because the competition took place 15 hours before airtime.
Ok, the stories can sometimes be interesting, but I want to watch the events, and I understand that the commercials are paying for the broadcast, but I don't want to watch some news anchor spewing on and on about something that really has no bearing on the competition at hand. Please stop this trend of making us feel sorry for the athletes and just let us watch the Olympics objectively. When I watch the Olympic games, I want to see the Olympic games.
