DISNEY & AMERICA ONLINE FIGHTS INTERNET ANTI-PORNOGRAPHY BILL
In a startling move, The Walt Disney Company has come out in opposition to a congressional measure that would protect children from online pornography, leading the American Family Association (AFA) to once again question the company's commitment to families.
"By opposing this bill, Disney demonstrates that it is insincere when it says it cares about families and children," said AFA Vice President Tim Wildmon. "All the company cares about is making a buck off everything possible, including soft-core porn."
Disney and others, including America Online, Motion Picture Association of America, and Microsoft lobbied House members against the Child On-Line Protection Act (COPA), which would require all web sites to verify an adult's age before allowing them to view pornographic material or other material deemed "harmful to minors."
"The requirements of COPA are nothing more than what we require of a store owner when the law says a minor can't buy beer or cigarettes," said Wildmon. "Why would Disney oppose such a minimal standard of protection for our children when they get online?"
Although Disney is mainly known for classics such as SNOW WHITE and recent releases such as THE LION KING and THE LITTLE MERMAID, its Touchstone and Miramax subsidiaries market R-rated films that include intense violence and strong sexual content. Lobbyists for Disney said the company was worried that some of its films, especially those produced by subsidiaries like Miramax and Touchstone Pictures, could not be marketed online if COPA becomes law.
"This amounts to a tacit admission by Disney that some of what the company markets could be considered pornography by this measure and harmful to minors," Wildmon said. "If Disney were not making such films and marketing them to minors, they wouldn't be worried about this bill."
The House passed COPA on Wednesday of this week to penalize commercial sites that give minors unfettered access to "harmful" material in spite of intense lobbying by Disney, American Online and others who opposed the legislation. The bill still faces obstacles as the Senate has yet to pass a stand-alone version of the bill.
