We took a different highway to get to the park today; we took Highway 191 out of Bozeman and went to the west entrance of Yellowstone. We had lunch in West Yellowstone at a sandwich shop where you had to ask the combination to use the bathroom. Life is different in a tourist trap! We were running low on snacks, so we bought lite cherry vanilla yogurt and cottage cheese at a grocery store.

We toured the lower loop of Yellowstone National Park today. The lower loop is the area of highest geothermal activity; some of the effects we saw were bubbling pools of mud, brightly colored steaming pools of water, and geysers (including the most famous of all). We went to places called Inspiration Point and Artist Point in hopes of seeing some attractive scenery, and we weren't disappointed.

We ate dinner in West Yellowstone at a fairly fancy restaurant and returned to Bozeman late in the day. We had quite a scare on the way up highway 191--some big critter crossed the road right in front of the pickup! We couldn't establish whether it was a mule deer, elk or moose, but I'd certainly advise against driving after dark in Wyoming or Montana, especially in areas where those big critters saunter across the highways. The critters there just stroll across the highways, as opposed to the way our Missouri deer bound up to the highways and bounce off your car; I'm not sure which behavior is worse.
