"Fast Love"
- George Michael
I was in the back of a van in Virginia on the way home from a working-vacation when I got
my first taste of the new George sound. I had tried four times before to hear "Fast
Love" the whole way through, but never caught the beginning. As usual, George
brings modern day 'Pop' to a more mature level while keeping the candy-type beat and
bouncy rhythms from the days of Wham! and the Faith album. Just like he
did with Freedom, he mixes the right blend of reality-based lyrics and
ear-catching melodies that you'll be humming later. Fast Love is mature enough to
appeal to the older crowd, but light and danceable enough to please a younger one.
Unfortunately, it looks like this was the only big song off this album, which was also the
same number of popular hits off his last album. He obviously knows how to make the music
that gets the reviews, but he seems to temper it with expressive music rather than a list
of Top 40 chartbusters. Maturity? Or refusal to 'sell-out'? To me, it's only the music
that counts...
