"Reach"
- Gloria Estephan
The 1996 Summer Olympics were extra memorable to me this time around for some unknown
reason. I found myself in front of the television practically every night cheering the USA
on in any event. I had recorded the Opening Ceremonies and was recording the Closing
Ceremonies when Gloria Estephan sang Reach live. I had heard the song a few times
before, but never knew it was the "Offical Song Of The Olympics". The words all
of a sudden made sense and took on a whole new meaning. But when video of Olympians was
projected on a huge screen over the crowd, while Gloria was singing about
"reaching higher...", the emotion of the whole Olympics, the USA winning, the
tragic explosion, the idea that thousands of athletes from the whole globe could come
together for peaceful competition brought on some deep emotions. Gloria Estephan seemed to
express all of these emotions, plus the excitement and determination of the Olympics in
one word: Reach.
